The Algorists

Often, people inquire, "What is an algorist?" At its core, an algorist is someone who engages with algorithms. While traditionally we've seen algorists as mathematicians, the term also encompasses artists who craft art through algorithmic methods, often developing their own algorithms. This narrative sheds light on how a set of artists embraced the term in 1995. The roots of algorithmic art delve deep, extending even to ancient art. However, it was the emergence of computational power in the late 20th century that gave rise to a unique artistic approach characterized by its form-generating capabilities. The power of modern computing offers artists an unprecedented advantage with their algorithms, comparable to how engines transformed industries during the industrial revolution. In 1969, upon experiencing the potential of algorithmic power, I embarked on a journey to harness it in my artistic endeavors.
